NHC Updates Forecasting for 2023

This is the most significant news blurb of this century and there ain’t much there. The short of it is the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is extending its tropical forecasting from five to seven days. They have been examining their data on forecasts vs. accuracy since 2019 and have decided they are accurate enough to extend the forecast an additional two days.

This office has noticed an increase in forecast accuracy over the last decade. The forecast tracks have been highly accurate, however, their intensity on landfall has not. I was in a webinar with the NHC when they admitted this was a failing point. This one data point, I believe, can experience an increase in accuracy if we had a national buoy drive increasing the accuracy and use of data reported from coastal buoys.

My project, Coastal Weather Anomaly Advance Detection System (CWAADS) aims to do just that. I just need to focus on getting the job done and WRITE THAT CODE!

Unfortunately, forecasting weather anomalies will not preserve the coast from damage, but could give people addition information and motivation to save themselves.
